We’re all anxiously riding the transition to sunnier, warmer days, melting away those winter blues.
Naturally, it’s now time to start thinking about spring cleanup landscape maintenance services.
Take a walk or drive around your commercial property and access your winter damage and note
the need of any traditional spring cleanup services, which ones you know you have the time and
resources to cover and those that will need the services of a professional landscape company.
Here are some recommendations we’ve come up with for you to consider:
1. Clear Leaves, Litter and Debris
After the snow melts, natural debris and litter should be removed as soon as possible. Leaves,
branches and junk left behind from the snow are not only unsightly, but will deter healthy growth of
your lawn, flower and plant beds. Raking of these areas is a smart spring cleanup start.
2. Aeration.
Lawns need help bouncing back after a harsh winter season as it embraces its main growing
season. Carefully walk your property to determine which areas need aeration before starting. It’s
also a common rule of thumb (a green one) not to perform aerating during a long drought.
3. Edging.
Be sure to create neat, sharp lines between plantings, beds and lawns by ordering landscape
edging services. Good landscaping companies perform their own landscape maintenance
inspections and will recommend edging services if it looks like the grounds haven’t been edged,
especially if things look rough where the grass meets beds and sidewalks.
4. Fresh Mulch and New Plants.
Old, worn-out mulch from last year is scrappy and faded, so be sure to have your beds cleaned out
and replenish them with fresh mulch. It looks nice and will do a better job of blocking weeds. Add
some color to your commercial property or business campus and plant new flowers and annuals.
As life returns to your landscape, make it stand out and pump up the curb appeal with splashes of
lively color strategically planted here and there. Consult your landscape service contractor’s design
department if you need some ideas and assistance in your new planting plan.
5. Irrigation Spring Start Up and Check.
When mid-May comes and April showers have dwindled, start up your irrigation systems. Have
your grounds maintenance service provider perform a complete checkup for nozzles, sprinkler
heads and drip irrigation, if applicable. They will watch for leaks, clogs and make needed
alignments and adjustments as needed.
6. Nontraditional Services.
Clogged gutters are big headache for property owners and managers. Window washing services
should also be considered. Look for a full-service property maintenance company that can handle
services like this that you may not initially think of when having traditional spring cleanup
performed. It goes back to that bigger bang for your buck when you can find someone that can
consolidate as many needed services under one roof.
If you had plans for new plantings, start making notes and brainstorming. Even if you don’t
consider yourself a landscape designer, but know what you like, gather articles and photos to find
a general direction. With this information, a landscape design pro can take these beginnings and
run with them.
Now that you have a general direction you’re comfortable with, it’s advisable to select a service
company that not only provides traditional landscape maintenance, but planting design and
installation as well. Consolidation of services is always budget-friendly. If all this sounds
reasonable to you, yet you don’t have the time to properly enact your own spring cleanup and
planting program, please call the professionals at The Service Innovators, headquartered in
Wheeling, IL, servicing Greater Chicagoland and the Midwest for over 3 decades now.
