News of road salt shortages started surfacing late last winter with reports that supplies were
dwindling across the Midwest and Northeast. As a result, knowing that salt supplies will go to the
City first, and that there are possible issues with salt mines, labor shortages, etc. that could affect
supplies this coming season, TSI has taken steps to assure we have enough salt this year to
satisfy all our customers in a normal winter snowfall season by stockpiling available salt now.
Still, we are letting our customers know that if this winter brings a relentless wave of storm events
(who remembers the never-ending storms of 2014?) causing the need to purchase more salt, we
have no control over drastic upswings in salt market price increases that could come due to the
threat of shortages. Therefore, provisions in bids and contracts will address this in a mutually
beneficial arrangement.
In addition to stockpiling salt for future use, here are other steps that TSI has in place to further
contain price increases due to the threat of salt shortages:

TSI produces our own liquid deicers for Pre-Treat Anti-icing, applying before the storm,
making removing snow and ice later much easier. Since we are constantly producing liquid
deicers year-round, we have an ample supply to also use as a deicing backup to offset rock
salt shortages.
•
TSI trains its Snowfighters to use best practices on proper salt application rates and methods
in order to reduce waste. This has made it possible to ride the wave of previous salt
shortages.
